{"id":13634,"date":"2013-04-09T02:04:39","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T01:04:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=13634"},"modified":"2013-04-09T02:04:39","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T01:04:39","slug":"memories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2013\/04\/09\/memories\/","title":{"rendered":"Memories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"scarfe1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/scarfe1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Untitled cartoon by Gerald Scarfe (early 1980s).<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Margaret Thatcher saved career of police chief who made Aids remarks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Margaret Thatcher helped save the career of a police chief constable who said Aids patients lived in a &#8220;human cesspool of their own making&#8221;, newly-released documents show.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>THE TELEGRAPH, 04 Jan 2012<\/p>\n<p>Sir James Anderton, then chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, faced calls to quit after making the comments, which were perceived as homophobic.<\/p>\n<p>Now documents secured by the <em>Manchester Evening News<\/em> give an incredible insight into the 1986 political storm \u2013 and show how close the country&#8217;s second largest police force came to meltdown.<\/p>\n<p>It can revealed that the government staged a series of crisis meetings aimed at keeping Sir James in post, and that other chief constables accused Sir James of &#8216;bringing ridicule&#8217; on the police service.<\/p>\n<p>The papers also show that senior civil servants were dismayed over the top cop&#8217;s &#8216;religious overtones&#8217; and feared he had a &#8216;taste for martyrdom&#8217;, but that Mrs Thatcher, the then Prime Minister, privately backed Sir James&#8217;s right to speak out \u2013 and stamped down demands for a public inquiry into the state of the force.
