The films he directed himself\u2014among them studies of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0095998\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Mapplethorpe&#8217;s photography<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0443466\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a history of the Chelsea Hotel<\/a> in New York\u2014gave him an opportunity to push some gay content into the TV schedules at a time when Britain&#8217;s gay population were seen as enough of a public threat to be <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Section_28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislated against<\/a>. Some of that proselytising impulse can be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/hollywood-babylon_Kenneth-Anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Kenneth Anger&#8217;s Hollywood Babylon<\/em><\/a> (1991), an hour-long documentary which alternates the life and work of the filmmaker with readings and enactments of the lurid episodes recounted in Anger&#8217;s scandal anthologies, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/70875.Hollywood_Babylon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood Babylon<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/1817778.Hollywood_Babylon_II\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood Babylon II<\/a><\/em>. Finch at one point asks whether <em>Fireworks<\/em>, the first film in Anger&#8217;s <em>Magick Lantern Cycle<\/em>, should be regarded as a pioneering piece of gay cinema; Anger&#8217;s says he&#8217;s happy if people take it that way but says little else about its evident homoerotic atmosphere. He remains as resistant to identity politics as he&#8217;s always been. (See the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/932839.Anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unauthorised biography<\/a> by Bill Landis for details.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/hollywood-babylon_Kenneth-Anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/anger2.jpg\" alt=\"anger2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Between the readings and interview sections Finch shows Anger being chauffeured around Beverly Hills in a hearse which stops occasionally at some locus of bygone scandal.
