It was drawn shortly after I was given a somewhat battered human skull by a student nurse (hello, Victoria, wherever you are), an object I sketched on a number of occasions before eventually making it into the finger-slashing fetish object below which appeared recently in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/lambshead-cabinet.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities<\/em><\/a>. The drawing dates from 1983\u2014I remember listening to the Art of Noise EP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Art-Of-Noise-Into-Battle-With-The-Art-Of-Noise\/master\/331028\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Into Battle<\/em><\/a> whilst working\u2014and it&#8217;s unusual for me in showing the drawn object alone on a sheet of paper with no attempt made to place it in a scene. It&#8217;s also a slightly misjudged rendering; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/pantechnicon\/mahakala.html\" target=\"_blank\">this ink drawing<\/a> from a year later shows a more careful representation of the skull&#8217;s proportions, spoiled a little by the pointless and unconvincing seascape I placed behind it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/images\/lambshead\/lambshead-09.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/skull2.jpg\" alt=\"skull2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mention yesterday of pencil drawing prompted me to dig out this item from one of my old portfolios.
