Their drawings are another set of scarce images forwarded by Sander Bink who maintains the <a href=\"http:\/\/rond1900.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rond1900<\/a> site. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2012\/08\/15\/further-echoes-of-aubrey\/\">this earlier post<\/a> for further examples.) Sandor also sent artwork details which I&#8217;ve quoted below. In addition to yet more overt Beardsley influence (the Verhagen above and Ren\u00e9 Gockinga&#8217;s woman with a candle) there&#8217;s also a striking Harry Clarke influence in the second Gockinga drawing which is closer to Clarke&#8217;s idiosyncratic style than (for example) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2010\/12\/23\/cardwell-higgins-versus-harry-clarke\/\">these later drawings<\/a> by Cardwell Higgins. Seeing one artist borrow the mannerisms of another is a common thing; far less common is finding an artist who adopts different styles the way Gockinga does. Incidentally, the Couperin novel mentioned below was published with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:BoekbandCouperusPsyche.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">a typically elegant cover design<\/a> by Symbolist artist Jan Toorop.<\/p>\n<p>(Thanks again Sander!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/netherlands2-big.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/netherlands2.jpg\" alt=\"netherlands2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Otto Verhagen. This is a personage from the story but to me it looks somewhat like an Oscar Wilde portrait!<br \/>\nIllustration for the very popular fairy tale for adults <em>Psyche<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Couperus\" target=\"_blank\">Louis Couperus<\/a> (1863\u20131923). You might have heard of Couperus: Oscar Wilde appreciated his decadent, somewhat homosexual, novel <em>Noodlot<\/em> (1890), translated as <em>Footsteps of fate<\/em>. Some letters were exchanged. Couperus&#8217; wife Elisabeth translated <em>Dorian Gray<\/em> in 1893.
