Photo by Sophie Morse.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been a little surprised that there aren&#8217;t more photo panoramas of stone circles, their shape being optimal for the 360-degree view. The stones at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avebury\" target=\"_blank\">Avebury<\/a> in Wiltshire are too widely situated to be seen effectively from a single viewpoint so the view above shows the West Kennet Avenue that leads towards the circles. The same photographer also has a view of the entrance to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.360cities.net\/image\/long-barrow#561.12,8.34,110.0\" target=\"_blank\">West Kennet Long Barrow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.360cities.net\/image\/silbury-hill-avebury-england#471.71,0.93,72.0\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/avebury2.jpg\" alt=\"avebury2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.360cities.net\/image\/silbury-hill-avebury-england#471.71,0.93,72.0\" target=\"_blank\">Silbury Hill<\/a>, Avebury. Photo by Matthew Kaye.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Close to Avebury village is Silbury Hill, one of the largest artificial mounds in the world and\u2014since its purpose is still contested\u2014a good contender for Britain&#8217;s most mysterious creation. The hill and Avebury stones (not to mention Stonehenge) are only the most spectacular landmarks in a remarkable county that&#8217;s scored all over with prehistoric remains.
