Equally retrograde (well it was 1957) is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Different_from_You_and_Me\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Anders als du und ich<\/em><\/a>, a film about wayward German youth directed by ex-Nazi propagandist Veit Harlan:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Klaus is a young man in post-war Berlin. He is drawn to his friend Manfred and, under the encouragement of their acquaintance, Dr. Winkler, explores the underground world of gay clubs and electronic music. His family begins to learn of his other life and do everything they can to set him straight.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A saving grace is the conspicuous deployment of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.audionautas.com\/2012\/04\/oskar-sala-el-ultimo-artesano-iv.html\" target=\"_blank\">Oskar Sala&#8217;s Trautonium<\/a>. They&#8217;re deviants\u2014of course they like weird electronic music! Sala&#8217;s instrument was his own invention which means it has a unique pre-Moog sound, famously used by Alfred Hitchcock in the score for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0056869\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Birds<\/em><\/a>. YouTube has a collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7-efrtYy4Rw\" target=\"_blank\">the electronica moments<\/a> from <em>Anders als du und ich<\/em>.
