Quay obsessives such as myself would have been happy to pay for an extra disc featuring more of their <em>oeuvre<\/em> but we can at least turn to YouTube to fill in some gaps. This is by no means everything so I may add more discoveries at a later date. Some of the DVD-issued films can be seen on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/BFIfilms#video=xdmrny\" target=\"_blank\">the BFI&#8217;s official Daily Motion channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I was eager to see the Stravinsky film again having watched it one time only in a Channel 4 screening some 25 years ago. After a fresh viewing it&#8217;s not as impressive as I remembered, in part because the Quay&#8217;s distinctive approach to animation\u2014and filmmaking generally\u2014developed a great deal following the unforgettable <em>Street of Crocodiles<\/em> (1986). <em>Igor: The Paris Years<\/em> concerns the composer&#8217;s relationship with Jean Cocteau and Vladimir Mayakovsky, all of whom are animated as cut-out figures in a Modernist cityscape with <em>The Rite of Spring<\/em> playing on a piano.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V1jmqsb7UFo\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"quays6.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/quays6.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V1jmqsb7UFo\" target=\"_blank\">Leos Jan\u00e1cek: Intimate Excursions<\/a> (1983). Part 2 is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l8O77m2XWZI\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a similar vein, but more successful, is this portrait of Czech composer Leos Jan\u00e1cek. This uses the same cut-out character style but places the composer in Eastern European settings similar (down to the floating tram pantographs) to those seen in the very first Quay film, <em>Nocturna Artificialia<\/em> (1979). Among the other puppet characters there&#8217;s one figure singing an aria who later appears as Enkidu in <em>This Unnameable Little Broom<\/em> (1985).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zlwL4fHqzV8\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"quays1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/quays1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zlwL4fHqzV8\" target=\"_blank\">Old Piano<\/a> (1988).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A very short (and poor quality) ident for MTV.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sFCNWMbYgok\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"quays5.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/quays5.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sFCNWMbYgok\" target=\"_blank\">March Of Greed<\/a> by Pere Ubu (2008).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VKhqjTnhsno\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"quays8.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/quays8.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VKhqjTnhsno\" target=\"_blank\">Song Of The Grocery Police<\/a> by Pere Ubu (2008).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Quays have produced several music videos, the most well-known being those for His Name Is Alive which can be seen in the DVD set. Missing from this list is a film for Michael Penn&#8217;s <em>Long Way Down (Look What The Cat Drug In)<\/em>. (If anyone finds a copy online, please leave a comment.) <em>March Of Greed<\/em> and <em>Song Of The Grocery Police<\/em> were produced in 2008 when the Quays had been commissioned to work with Pere Ubu on <a href=\"http:\/\/ubuprojex.net\/bringmethehead.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Bring Me the Head of Ubu Roi<\/em><\/a>, a stage version of Alfred Jarry&#8217;s play which sounded like a dream production but which received some less-than-enthusiastic reviews.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5XjKmwwpPT4\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"quays4.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/quays4.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Trailer for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5XjKmwwpPT4\" target=\"_blank\">Inventorium of Traces<\/a> (2009).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A taster for a 23-minute film about Count Jan Potocki, author of <em>The Saragossa Manuscript<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oxtjoH--GbA\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"quays3.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/quays3.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oxtjoH--GbA\" target=\"_blank\">Comme des Garcons Fragrances \u2013 Wonderwood<\/a> (2010).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A promotional film for a perfume.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/xpcjnj_the-quay-brothers-mikhail-rudy-cite-de-la-musique-mars-2012_music\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"quays2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/quays2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/xpcjnj_the-quay-brothers-mikhail-rudy-cite-de-la-musique-mars-2012_music\" target=\"_blank\">The Quay Brothers &amp; Mikha\u00efl Rudy @ Cit\u00e9 de la musique<\/a> (2012).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another trailer and another collaboration for a French music festival.
