Yes, V\u00e1clav is the son of Czech Surrealists Jan \u0160vankmajer and Eva \u0160vankmajerov\u00e1, and <em>The Torchbearer<\/em> (2005) is the third of three short films he&#8217;s directed. Like the celebrated films of his father this is an animated piece in which a faceless warrior navigates a ruined labyrinth where lethal traps are prepared by a group of living female statues. The style reminded me more of some of the Brothers Quay shorts than the snapping, jerking works of \u0160vankmajer Sr.: the gliding statues are reminiscent of the tailors&#8217; dummies in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.screenonline.org.uk\/film\/id\/498218\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Street of Crocodiles<\/em><\/a> (1986) while the mechanical traps call to mind Gilgamesh&#8217;s murderous table in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.screenonline.org.uk\/film\/id\/720892\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>This Unnameable Little Broom<\/em><\/a> (1985). (And, yes&#8230;also the death machine in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u6msoO4j51k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Pendulum, the Pit and Hope<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>V\u00e1clav \u0160vankmajer&#8217;s website has <a href=\"http:\/\/vaclavsvankmajer.jex.cz\/menu\/film\/svetlonos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a page<\/a> devoted to the production of the film.
