I directed her to the plot of Aristophanes&#8217; <em>Lysistrata<\/em>, the most celebrated example of withholding sexual favours in order to effect political change. Aristophanes&#8217; play is a comedy but the protest can be quite serious, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2009\/may\/01\/kenya-women-sex-strike\" target=\"_blank\">a group of Kenyan women<\/a> demonstrated in 2009.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/lysistrata2.jpg\" alt=\"lysistrata2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These illustrations are from a French translation by Charles Marie Z\u00e9vort published in 1898. The illustrator was &#8220;Notor&#8221;, better known as the Vicomte Gabriel de Roton, who specialised in imitating the decorative style of art from Ancient Greece. The subject matter may be bawdy but you wouldn&#8217;t really know it from the illustrations. For drawings that honour the details of the story it&#8217;s necessary to look to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pornokrates.com\/lysistrata.html\" target=\"_blank\">Aubrey Beardsley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/lysistrata3.jpg\" alt=\"lysistrata3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Notor&#8217;s <em>Lysistrata<\/em> can be downloaded at the <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/lysistrata00arisuoft\" target=\"_blank\">Internet Archive<\/a>.
