As with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2012\/03\/09\/john-martins-musical-afterlife\/\">John Martin<\/a>, I&#8217;m surprised there aren&#8217;t more examples. Once again, Discogs.com proves incomplete so I&#8217;ve added a couple more including the first on this list, <em>Docteur Faust<\/em>. If you know of any others, please leave a comment.<\/p>\n<p>Igor Wakh\u00e9vitch&#8217;s berserk masterpiece is a cult item in this house, and something I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2006\/08\/06\/the-music-of-igor-wakhevitch\/\">written about already<\/a>. The cover art is the icing on an unclassifiable cake.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"druillet10.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/druillet10.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Grail (1970) by Grail.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The cover is the opening page of <em>The Wild Wind Isles<\/em>, one of Druillet&#8217;s Lone Sloane stories. Produced by Rod Stewart; did you notice? &#8220;We are sailing&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"druillet4.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/druillet4.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Electric Ladyland (1975) by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A gatefold sleeve for a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/hendrix.guide.pagesperso-orange.fr\/alternates.htm\" target=\"_blank\">four Hendrix reissues<\/a> on the\u00a0Barclay label. The other covers were provided by Moebius, Jean Sol\u00e9 and an artist unidentified on the link above but it looks to me like the work of Philippe Caza.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"druillet3.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/druillet3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Black Sun (1978) by Black Sun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Black suns are a regular feature of Druillet&#8217;s work (and mine, ahem) so the artist at least suits the title. The debut album of a short-lived French funk\/soul group.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/salammbo2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>East\/West (1980) by Richard Pinhas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The French equivalent of Krautrock doesn&#8217;t have a name but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richard-pinhas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Pinhas<\/a> is one of its leading practitioners. This is still my favourite among his solo works, not least because it&#8217;s more successfully musical than other albums which feature great slabs of guitar or synth doodling. In addition to a cover of David Bowie&#8217;s <em>Sense Of Doubt<\/em> there&#8217;s also science fiction author Norman Spinrad ranting through a vocoder on the opening and closing tracks. The great cover art is a page from Druillet&#8217;s 1980 adaptation of Flaubert&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Salammb\u00f4<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"druillet9.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/druillet9.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>K-Priss (1980) by Georges Gr\u00fcnblatt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Druillet only provided the title design on this one, the photography being by P. Jelin.\u00a0Georges Gr\u00fcnblatt was a member of French rock outfit Heldon. His only solo album includes fellow Heldon members Richard Pinhas, Patrick Gauthier, Francois Auger and Didier Batard.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"druillet8.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/druillet8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Neverending Destiny (1990) by Agressor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A French death metal band. Only in France would you find an album like this being embellished by an artist better known for apocalyptic Lovecraftian frenzy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"druillet11.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/druillet11.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>La Nuit (1995) by Proton Burst.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A mini-album by a French band that not only features Druillet art <a href=\"http:\/\/protonburst.free.fr\/pb\/got147.php?cat=03_La_Nuit\" target=\"_blank\">inside and out<\/a> but is based on the Druillet book, <em>La Nuit<\/em> (1976), that the artist called his darkest work.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"druillet15.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/druillet15.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Metropolis (2002) by Art Zoyd.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>French band Art Zoyd have been going since the late 60s, and are still active. This release is a concept album based on Fritz Lang&#8217;s film.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"druillet12.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/druillet12.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alexisstar Morphalite (2005) by Hidden.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The central image is a page adapted from <em>Yragael<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"druillet13.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/druillet13.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Yogsothery &#8211; Gate I : Chaosmogonic Rituals Of Fear (2010) by Various Artists.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the more apocalyptic moments from <em>Yragael<\/em> on the cover of a metal collection dedicated to HP Lovecraft.
