{"id":10497,"date":"2011-11-20T01:54:35","date_gmt":"2011-11-20T01:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=10497"},"modified":"2013-02-02T15:44:57","modified_gmt":"2013-02-02T15:44:57","slug":"weekend-links-85","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2011\/11\/20\/weekend-links-85\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend links 85"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2011\/11\/17\/cosmic-geometry\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"farmanfarmaian.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/farmanfarmaian.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Group I (Convertible Series, 2010) by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2011\/11\/17\/cosmic-geometry\/\" target=\"_blank\">Monir Farmanfarmaian<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The four albums recorded by Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis under the name <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/artist\/Dome\" target=\"_blank\">Dome<\/a> are being <a href=\"http:\/\/editionsmego.com\/release\/DOME12345\" target=\"_blank\">reissued by Editions Mego<\/a> together with Gilbert &amp; Lewis&#8217;s <em>Yclept<\/em> album. I always preferred Gilbert &amp; Lewis in their Dome incarnation (and Colin Newman solo) to the punk and post-punk stylings of their former band, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinkflag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wire<\/a>. Dome were (among other things) eccentric, awkward, noisy, hypnotic and experimental. Their recordings seemed to go largely unnoticed in the early 1980s so it&#8217;s good to see them being reissued.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkette.com\/456726\/a-childrens-treasury-of-american-cops-brutally-attacking-citizens\" target=\"_blank\">A Children\u2019s Treasury of American Cops Brutally Attacking Citizens<\/a>: &#8220;&#8230;it takes quite a lot of tax money to keep a bunch of vicious thugs overfed and dressed like junior Darth Vaders with their portable hard-ons, on the off-chance some college kids might one day peacefully sit outside to protest this nation\u2019s revolting descent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Stevenson, as has been said, was disarmingly candid about the material he borrowed for <em>Treasure Island<\/em>. One name, however, is missing from the extensive catalogue of self-confessed &#8216;plagiarisms&#8217;.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-tls.co.uk\/tls\/public\/article823019.ece\" target=\"_blank\">John Sutherland<\/a> at the TLS.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Messiaen&#8217;s advice was revelatory. &#8216;You have the good fortune of being an architect and having studied special mathematics&#8217;, he told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/music\/2011\/nov\/17\/iannis-xenakis-huddersfield-contemporary-music\" target=\"_blank\">Xenakis<\/a>. &#8216;Take advantage of these things. Do them in your music.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;They always said punk was an influence. Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, what a load of old shit that was. It&#8217;s Thatcherite art care of Saatchi &amp; Saatchi.&#8221; And don&#8217;t ask <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/07402-jamie-reid-sex-pistols-occupy\" target=\"_blank\">Jamie Reid<\/a> about the Sex Pistols.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lambdaliterary.org\/features\/11\/14\/dennis-cooper-florid-mysteries\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dennis Cooper<\/a> is interviewed at Lambda Literary.
