From a late Surrealist to an early one. Jind\u0159ich \u0160tyrsk\u00fd is a Czech artist best remembered today for his collages but he was also a painter, a photographer<\/a> and a publisher of erotic material. He illustrated and published a Czech edition of Lautr\u00e9amont’s Maldoror<\/em><\/a>, and helped found the Surrealismus<\/em> review in Prague.<\/p>\n The Bathe (1934).<\/em><\/p>\n Regular readers won’t be surprised to hear that I’ve liked \u0160tyrsk\u00fd’s collages for years, many of which subject sentimental Victorian illustration to processes of violent transmutation. Ever since seeing The Bathe<\/em> I’ve found it impossible to look at one of Renoir’s fleshy nudes without wondering what happened to the exposed viscera. Weimar<\/a> covered \u0160tyrsk\u00fd’s career in some detail last year so that’s a good place to go for further information.
