Ah yes, The Black Dossier. Should have remembered that, I wondered why Doctor Syn rang a bell. In addition, the late, great Patrick McGoohan played him in a TV adaptation from Disney in 1963.

No need to be coy about enjoying the Pirates trilogy, John! They're a rip-roaring romp. Your decription of Davey Jones' Lovecraftian- Hodgsonesque look is spot on too.
I really want to see you illustrate a pirate tale in comics at some point- those designs are the business.
Oh, Doctor Syn makes an appearance in Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's Black Dossier, check it out!

Seconding the recommendation of Dr Syn here. A combination of pirate, smuggler and vicar is always a good thing. Mind you, I came across him by way of the version broadcast on BBC radio 7; read (rather well) by Rufus Sewell, rather than the book. It's repeated pretty regularly, so you should be able to catch it in the next few weeks or so.

Nice to see my personal favorite, Captain Slaughterboard, here too.

Doctor Syn is someone whose exploits I've yet to read. Maybe something to follow up once I've sated myself on RLS. I'm aware of Fraser's book as well although it seemed a bit too broadly comic to attract me. I know that's contradictory given my praise of the PoC films... The post following this one gives an idea of the kind of pirate tale I've yet to find, something dark and fierce and voodoo-drenched. And I've read Kidnapped but I've yet to see the Michael Caine version. Maybe now would be a good time.

Arr, Pirates! Shiver me timbers! My favourite fictional buccaneer is Doctor Syn, the intelligentsia among pirates. (If you can have an intelligentsia of one - ah but then there's Happy Dan Pew in George MacDonald Fraser's romp, Pyrates! And the female pirates in Celia Rees' latest book (some shocking typos in that one, though). And of course Nancy Blackett.

Talking of RLS, we enjoyed watching Kidnapped! with Michael Caine as Alan Breck - at one point his pseudo-Scots accent slipped and he was all "You do NOT want to do it like THAT..."
