Oscar was obsessed with the pagan world, like many of his contemporaries, yet renouncing the church was pretty unthinkable in those days unless you were an outlaw like Aleister Crowley. And besides, he was also fascinated by the pomp and ceremony of the Catholics, something many British churchgoers regarded as unwholesome.</description>
