anyway, i think that this book is really good because it illustrates the flaws in society without holding back, plus the artwork is really good.

Another great bit of symmetry between characters that wasn't mentioned by anyone in this interview, as pointed out by the Watchmen wiki's authors:

<blockquote>"Veidt is counterpoint to Rorschach: He is a self-made affluent where Rorschach lives in squalor. He is a powerful world figure where Rorschach is an outlaw on the fringe. He is popular where Rorschach is reviled. He is handsome where Rorschach is unattractive. He is elegant where Rorschach is blunt. He has launched a cologne while Rorschach's hygeine is often questioned. He is sexually ambiguous where Rorschach is a-sexual. He is Shelley's Ozymandian-like empire where Rorschach seems the fleeting desert sand. He is liberal where Rorschach's conservatism brushes the extreme. He is brilliant where Rorschach appears uneducated. He sees multiple perspectives where Rorschach is close-minded and narrow. He is genial and considerate where Rorschach is brusque and hostile. He forces himself to imagine all the painful consequences of his actions where Rorschach gives them almost no thought. Most importantly, he is practical and utilitarian where Rorschach is Kantian and principle-governed. At the end, Veidt appears to have succeeded in averting the imminent nuclear disaster and establishing his utopia, while Rorschach has died a failure for refusing to compromise his values, and yet even from beyond the grave Rorschach has the opportunity to thwart Veidt's plan by means of the journal he had sent to the New Frontiersman."</blockquote>

[...] Long ago I edited a comics fanzine called FA. In 1988 a few of us got round a table with Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons for a long discussion about Watchmen. Last month someone put it on the web, and it still looks a pretty good piece to me. Don’t ask me to stand by my comments of 18 years ago, but if you’re a fan of the title you might like to read the round table discussion. Two of the participants are still among my best friends, I am pleased to say. [...]

Hi Martin, and thanks.

This has been of great interest to people judging by the links it's received, and with good reason since it's still the best interview I've seen about Watchmen. A shame you didn't get everyone to talk for another hour! Valuable too for redressing the balance slightly in Dave Gibbon's favour. Alan tends to get all the attention for Watchmen despite (as the interview shows) him being a very generous collaborator, eager for input from his artists. I'm sure he wouldn't want DG's input to be regarded as all his own.

And I'm equally sure he wouldn't mind this interview being posted here. We've collaborated on several projects in the past (The Great Old Ones in my Haunter of the Dark book, Moon and Serpent CDs) so I'm fairly secure about that. As far as I'm aware, interviews are copyright the magazine that first publishes them unless an interviewer has some special deal.

This was just brought to my attention. I don't know who owns copyright in things like this (all of us or me, I guess), and frankly I'm not terribly fussed about it on a personal level* (and I'm not necessarily so easy to locate if you had tried), but Alan in particular tends to be particular about these things, if he happens to come across it or someone tells him about it.

I can't actually remember how we ended up with an Atom-Fat Freddy's Cat cover for the 100th issue. It's a long time ago...

*Actually I like that some things I did long ago are still of some interest here and there, to be honest.

Ah yes, the hippy cat... Very funny stuff. You realise that Maxwell the Magic Cat is based in part on this feline? I've got a collection of the FFC strips somewhere, also the first six issues of the Furry Freak Brothers. Gilbert Shelton had his own comedy superhero as well, Wonder Warthog.

Showing my ignorance of Underground Comix there.

http://www.fatfreddiescat.com/

So many things I still have to learn about.

Terry Gilliam says in the Foreword to AM Portrait book that the only way to do Watchmen properly is to make a TV series out of it. A 2 hour movie would lose too much detail. Also it's a classic comic why spoil it by making a bad movie out of it.

Neil Gaiman said during one of his Sydney Writers Festivals talks that he hopes they never make a crap movie out of Sandman.

The cover is an obviously hasty drawing by Garry Leach. The cat is Fat Freddie's Cat from Gilbert Shelton's Furry Freak Brothers.

I seem to remember TG being touted as Watchmen director round about 1988. Saw him on TV at that time wearing a Watchmen badge.

RE; The cover
What the hell is that huge giant cat like thing with the question mark like tail supposed to be. I don't remember that in Watchmen and why is the superheroes shield blank?

70 p??
Well it was almost 20 years ago.

The spelling mistakes weren't that bad and it was easy to figure out what the correct word was supposed to be.

Thanks for posting this. I wonder when Terry Gilliam first started being touted as a possible Watchmen film director?
And will he ever get to make Good Omens.

Here's hoping.

"Have you got a copy of the cover."

Yep, it's nasty:

"Have you got any more hidden gems of rare to locate Alan Moore interviews?"

No, that was it. I should have proofed it a bit more but it was exhausting my patience (and my time!). Getting that chunk of text into WordPress without it crashing the software was difficult as well which means it's an awkward thing to edit.

They all seem to have had fun doing that interview.
Have you got a copy of the cover. At wikipedia there's only the cover for Issue #115

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy_Advertiser

If you print it out as A4 it comes to 32 pages. Only a few misspellings in it.

Thanks for that. Have you got any more hidden gems of rare to locate Alan Moore interviews?

Now I'll have to re-read my copy of Absolute Watchmen to pick up on all the things they point out that I missed because I read it too fast.

http://comics.ign.com/articles/666/666025p1.html

I wonder if they deliberately made that article #666 as a joke.
